  • Clear weeds and add mulch: Pull late-season weeds before they drop seeds. Add a fresh layer of organic mulch or compost around trees, shrubs, and perennial beds to insulate root systems against temperature swings.(Remember to keep mulch pulled back a few inches directly away from tree trunks/stems to prevent rot.)

  • Plant spring-blooming bulbs: Fall is the ideal time to get daffodils, tulips, and garlic into the ground so they can establish roots before the ground hardens.

  • Tender plants: Dig up and store tender bulbs like dahlias or gladiolus if you haven't already, and bring sensitive potted plants or container-grown items into protected areas.

  • Disconnect and drain hoses: Disconnect garden hoses, drain them completely, and store them indoors. Put insulated foam covers on outdoor spigots.

Why mid-October opens a specific pruning window

Deciduous trees don't go dormant in a single day. They ease into it over roughly two weeks after the first hard cold snap of fall. And that transition period — leaves down or almost down, sap still slow enough to seal a cut, structure finally visible without foliage in the way — is the best time of the entire year to prune most trees.

  • Wounds seal cleanly. Cuts made in dormancy callus over cleanly through winter. The same cut in summer stays open for weeks and invites disease.
  • You can actually see what you're doing. With the leaves down, the tree's real shape is exposed. Crossed branches, weak crotches, deadwood — everything you need to fix is visible for the first time in months.
  • Pests aren't active. The insects and fungi that exploit fresh cuts are dormant too. Prune in July and something is on your wound in three days. Prune in late October and nothing shows up until spring.
  • Cold snaps are still weeks away for most zones. You want to prune BEFORE the ground freezes hard, but after leaf drop. The mid-October to early-November corridor is exactly that.

Snake Season

Snakes are highly active across the Tri-Cities as temperatures warm in the spring and summer. While harmless species like garter and gopher snakes are common, the venomous Northern Pacific rattlesnake also shares our shrub-steppe environment and local trail systems. 

Common Species in the Area

  • Northern Pacific Rattlesnake: Washington's only native venomous snake. They feature a distinct triangular head, vertical pupils, and a rattle on the tail.
  • Gopher Snake (Bullsnake): Often mistaken for rattlesnakes due to their size, coloring, and defensive hissing. They have pointed tails instead of rattles and are completely harmless to humans.
  • Garter Snake: Smaller, non-venomous snakes often spotted around yards, gardens, and near bodies of water like the Columbia River. 

Local Hotspots

Watch for snakes basking on rocks, trails, and asphalt on sunny mornings. Known local hotspots include: 

  • Badger Mountain and Candy Mountain trails
  • Chamna Natural Preserve
  • Rattlesnake Slope
  • Areas bordering undeveloped land in West Richland and Badger Canyon
